Looking Back 2013
The MCB continues to grow from strength to strength and 2013 has been no exception. Attendance at our 6 meetings during the year ranged from 16 to 22, including 6 newcomers, most of whom now attend on a regular basis.
Our mailing list now stands at 67 and includes anyone who has expressed an interest in the MCB. We have also re-defined our membership and this now includes anyone who has attended a meeting in the last 2 years. The membership list now stands at 36 but will only be of significance should we ever need to have a vote.
This year our long standing co-ordinator, Ron, has moved out of our area and will be greatly missed. However he still stays in touch and intends to attend a meeting whenever possible. Our best wishes for the future go to him and his wife Margaret. Certainly the MCB owes a deep gratitude to Ron, without whom the MCB would not be the vibrant organisation it is today.
This year we had an interesting, informative and enjoyable brewery trip to Grainstore in Oakham, with 17 members attending. It was made clear in advance that we were experienced home brewers and requested a knowledgeable brewer to take us round. We were not disappointed. Although Tony Davis (the owner, head brewer and ex- head brewer at Ruddles when they were at Langham) was supposed to be in America, he turned out to be our guide. The tour lasted a full 2 hours and we got his expert opinion on numerous questions – in fact Tony seemed to enjoy the session as much as we did.
This year one of our members, Steve H, held a workshop at his home in Burton. We made a number of pieces of brewing equipment, including a counter flow chiller for myself. This proved to be very efficient and in a test reduced boiling water to 16C in one pass.
We held 2 socials during the year, visiting Sheffield in the summer and Derby just before Christmas. Both events were very well attended and we all enjoyed some excellent beers and of course good company.
Finally a number of our members achieved success in various national home brew competitions during the year, including James F, Steve H, and Steve S. Well done to all!
