Joint Meeting With NCB, 31st October 2015
This year the MCB hosted the second annual get together with NCB, which included both a competition and brewing quiz.
The competition was to brew a Simonds 1880 bitter which originally had an OG of 1062. However for this competition we agreed that the beers should be confined to the 1045 – 1050 range. The original recipe included an ingredient called Pale Amber Malt, which is no longer commercially available. Therefore we all had to either roast our own or substitute alternative malts, which hopefully might achieve the same results. In practice there was a wide variety of malts used but only 2 members of NCB did the job properly by roasting their own malts. With one exception, hops used in all the recipes were Goldings and Fuggles in accordance with the original recipe. A wide variety of yeasts were used.
The competition attracted a total of 16 entries, 9 from MCB and 7 from NCB. For judging purposes we divided all attendees into 4 tables with representatives from both camps on each table.
The winners were:
1st Sean O’T
2nd James F
3rd Malc N
Joint 4th Steve H and Allan G.
They were all presented with certificates which had been very professionally created by Steve H. A big thank you to him.
Our thanks go to Peter F, Steve R and Jason F for officiating and to the Durden Park Beer Circle for researching the original recipe and allowing us to use it.
Afterwards we held a brewing quiz and the occupants of the winning table were presented with brewing vouchers kindly donated by BrewUK.
The consensus was that it was a very enjoyable day and we look forward to a similar event next year.
Once again, congratulations to all the winners.
